From Humble Beginnings to Empowering Futures
Kelly Simmons III grew up as the youngest of five in a modest home in Anderson, South Carolina. Guided by a hardworking father who became a pastor and a nurturing mother who was a stay-at-home mom , Kelly learned early on the value of faith, resilience, service, and the belief that greatness is within reach for anyone willing to embrace it.
As a shy, average student, Kelly never imagined he would one day inspire thousands. But his journey took a turn when mentors saw the potential in him: potential he couldn’t yet see in himself. Winning the prestigious Mr. T.L. Hanna Pageant, becoming the first African-American to do so, marked a pivotal moment. It was there he realized the power of stepping out of his comfort zone.
Kelly’s path to leadership was anything but straightforward. A self-described “C and D student with A and B potential,” his first semester in college ended with a 1.7 GPA. But instead of giving up, he leaned on the lessons he learned from his parents, ROTC mentors, and life experiences. Through perseverance, Kelly graduated, became a first-generation college graduate, commissioned officer, and embarked on a mission to unlock leadership potential in others.
